Grandmother develops high-vis for kids

Sydney grandmother, Susan Hughes, was run down on a quiet suburban street as an 8-year-old and has since suffered chronic spinal pain. When a friend also shared his traumatic experience of nearly running over a school child on a rainy afternoon, they came up with Vizymates.

The product consists of fluorescent tubes and straps for kids’ backpacks, which they spent two years testing with parents’ focus groups. “Our hunch that having the tubes hang off the backpacks would aid visibility has paid off,” says Susan.

She’s delighted that her primary school, Normanhurst West Public, is promoting Vizymates to help keep another generation of students safe. “All four kindergarten classes at my granddaughters’ school, Pennant Hills Public, are wearing Vizymates, as are kids at Hornsby North.”
